ChatGPT Ads by Industry: Which Categories Fit, Ranked
Not every industry belongs on ChatGPT ads yet. We rank seven categories by conversational fit and economics, from DTC ecommerce at the top to the ones that should wait, with a full playbook linked for each.

Not every industry belongs on ChatGPT ads yet, and the honest ranking is shorter than the ad platform's ambitions. We rank seven categories by two tests: does the buyer actually open a conversation before purchasing, and do the economics beat what you pay elsewhere. Each entry links to the full playbook.
How we ranked these

Two tests, applied to every category.
Conversational fit. ChatGPT ads have no keywords. Matching runs on the conversation itself, steered by context hints (OpenAI Ads Manager docs, 2026). So the question is whether your buyer actually talks to ChatGPT before buying. "What moisturizer works for rosacea" is a conversation. "AA batteries" is not.
Economics. The ad unit is a single sponsored box below the answer, one advertiser per matched conversation. That scarcity is worth paying for when the click is cheap relative to your alternatives and the customer is worth a lot. Typical starting bids run $3 to $5, rising to $8 to $18 in software and finance (WebFX; OpenAI docs; practitioner reports, 2026).
One caveat before the list: this is early. CTRs on chatbot ads average around 0.9% industry-wide (eMarketer, 2026), our own US campaigns have averaged roughly 1.3% since July 2026 (our campaign data), and agencies still report measurement gaps (eMarketer/Digiday, 2026). Rankings will move as the data does.
1. DTC and ecommerce brands
The clearest fit on the platform. Product feed ads, launched June 2026, let you upload a Google Shopping-format catalog and ChatGPT auto-generates the ads, with a 100 SKU minimum (OpenAI Ads Manager docs; Digiday, June 2026). The context is already commercial: shoppers describe a problem, ChatGPT recommends products, and referred traffic converts at 15.9% vs 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025). If you sell physical products online, this is where you start.

2. B2B SaaS
The surprise second place. Software CPCs of $8 to $18 (WebFX and practitioner reports, 2026) sound expensive until you price the same buyer on Google, where competitive B2B keywords routinely cost multiples of that. And the conversational fit is real: evaluators ask ChatGPT to compare tools, build shortlists, and draft requirements. A labeled sponsored box under that answer reaches a buyer mid-evaluation.

3. Beauty
Beauty purchases start as questions: skin type, ingredients, routines, sensitivities. That is exactly the kind of multi-turn conversation the matching system reads well, and beauty catalogs translate cleanly into product feeds. The category also benefits from ChatGPT's advice framing, since a recommendation in context carries more weight than a banner ever did.

4. Fashion
Fit, occasion, and styling questions give fashion a genuine conversational moment, and feed ads handle large SKU counts, up to 1M SKUs per catalog (OpenAI docs, 2026). Fashion ranks below beauty because more of its discovery still happens visually on other platforms, and a single square image in a sponsored box is a narrow canvas for a lookbook brand.

5. Food and beverage
Dietary constraints, ingredient questions, and gifting are real conversations, and DTC food brands with feed-ready catalogs can plug straight in. The category sits mid-table because average order values are lower, which makes the math on even a $3 to $5 CPC tighter than it is for the categories above.

6. Local and professional services
The sleeper category. Targeting supports country, region, DMA, and postal code (OpenAI docs, 2026), which makes geo-fenced campaigns for lawyers, realtors, and other high-LTV services practical. And here is the notable signal: across every "chatgpt ads for X" query we track, lawyers show the only strong commercial intent, with a $73.89 CPC on Google in our keyword data. When one client is worth thousands, a conversational click at single-digit dollars is an easy trade.

7. Shopify merchants
Less an industry than a cross-cut: whatever you sell, Shopify's export tooling makes the Google Shopping-format feed the easy part, so setup friction is lowest here. Rank yourself by your actual category above, then use the Shopify-specific route to get live fast.

Who should wait
Healthcare and regulated categories. These are reportedly excluded from the ads beta for now. If that is your category, the organic layer is your only layer, which makes optimizing your catalog and content for AI the whole game.
Impulse and price-only retail. Nothing blocks you from bidding, but the conversational moment does not exist. Nobody consults ChatGPT before a $6 impulse buy, and pure price-comparison shoppers get better tools elsewhere. Low AOV plus no conversation equals wasted budget.
Anyone who has not fixed the basics. Feed quality, conversion tracking, and a working landing path matter more than category. Our setup guide covers the checklist, and the cost breakdown covers what you will actually pay.
Where Tru Commerce fits
Ads rent the conversation. The organic recommendation is earned, and it is the only layer Plus and Pro users ever see, since paid tiers get no ads at all (OpenAI, 2026). As Viren put it on the record: "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers" (The Hindu BusinessLine, Aug 28, 2026).
So whatever your industry rank above, sequence it the same way: measure the earned layer first, then decide whether to rent the second one. Run the free Citation Rank scan to see where AI assistants already recommend you, then use our ChatGPT Ads hub to plan the paid side.
