ChatGPT Ads for B2B and SaaS: The $8-18 CPC Category

Software and finance are ChatGPT's most expensive ad categories at $8-18 per click - and for B2B economics, that is still a bargain. How to run lead-gen campaigns built for long sales cycles.

ChatGPT Ads for B2B and SaaS: The $8–18 CPC Category — Tru Commerce guide

Software and finance are the most expensive categories in ChatGPT's ad auction - $8-18 per click against $3-5 starting bids everywhere else. For B2B and SaaS, that premium is the point: buyers asking ChatGPT to compare platforms are deep in evaluation, and the machinery - conversion-optimized CPC, context hints, a server-side Conversions API - is built for the long, considered purchase you sell.

Why software and finance clicks cost $8-18

ChatGPT's ad auction is relevance-weighted second-price, and prices track the value of the conversation. Across most categories, OpenAI's recommended starting bids sit at $3-5 per click; in software and finance, real CPCs run $8-18 (WebFX; OpenAI docs; practitioner reports, 2026).

The premium exists because of who is asking. A user telling ChatGPT "we're a 40-person team outgrowing our current CRM, what should we look at" is not browsing - they are mid-evaluation, often with budget approved. Advertisers bid up those conversations for the same reason B2B keywords have always been expensive: the person on the other side is worth a lot.

Entry costs have collapsed since launch. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026 at $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum; both are gone (OpenAI announcement; OpenAI docs). Since the self-serve Ads Manager Beta opened at ads.openai.com in May 2026, there is no minimum lifetime spend and the minimum daily budget is $25 (OpenAI, May 2026) - a seed-stage SaaS company can test this channel for under $800 a month.

The B2B math still works

An $8-18 click sounds expensive next to a $3-5 consumer click. It is not expensive by B2B standards - competitive software and finance terms on search have carried painful CPCs for years, and B2B teams justify them because the unit of value is a closed deal, not a click.

Run the arithmetic. At $15 per click, 100 clicks cost $1,500; if 5 become qualified demos, that is $300 per demo - defensible for a product with five-figure annual contract value. The question is not the CPC; it is whether the clicks convert.

Two signals say the traffic quality is real, each with an honest caveat:

  • Conversion intent. ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic converts at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025). That figure is ecommerce, not B2B - but it is the strongest published evidence that users arriving from a ChatGPT conversation arrive decided.
  • Click-through behavior. Chatbot ad CTR benchmarks at ~0.9% versus ~6.4% for Google search ads (eMarketer, 2026); in our own US campaigns running since July 2026, CTR has averaged ~1.3% (our campaign data). Fewer clicks, but each follows a conversation, not a glance.

The category is young - ChatGPT ads only hit $100M annualized revenue in 2026 (eMarketer, 2026) - and agencies report measurement gaps and unproven outcomes so far (eMarketer/Digiday, 2026). Budget test money, not your whole search budget. We compare the channels in ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads.

Conversion-optimized CPC fits lead gen

ChatGPT ads offer three bid models: CPM for reach, CPC for traffic, and conversion-optimized CPC - OpenAI optimizes delivery toward your selected conversion event but still charges per click (OpenAI Help Center, "Create campaigns for ChatGPT", 2026).

The third model is built for B2B. E-commerce advertisers optimize toward purchases; you optimize toward the top of your pipeline. Define a lead_created event firing on demo requests, trial signups, or contact-form submissions, and the auction learns to find conversations that produce leads, not just clicks - CPC economics, lead-gen delivery.

This matters more on ChatGPT than on search because you cannot pick your queries - delivery optimization does the query selection for you, so give it the right target: a signup, not a pageview. Campaign setup is covered end to end in our setup guide.

Write context hints for evaluation moments

There are no keywords in ChatGPT ads. Matching is conversational - current conversation topic, past chats, past ad interactions - and advertisers steer it with context hints: OpenAI recommends 5-15 discrete, 1-2-sentence buyer-moment descriptions per ad group. Hints guide matching; they are not exact-match rules (OpenAI Ads Manager docs).

For B2B, describe evaluation moments, not product features:

  • Comparison moments. "A user is comparing customer-support platforms because their team has outgrown shared inboxes."
  • Trigger moments. "A finance lead is researching expense-management software after a failed audit or a manual close that ran long."
  • Migration moments. "An engineering manager is asking how to migrate off a legacy tool and which alternatives support SSO and audit logs."
  • Budget moments. "A founder is asking what this category should cost at a 50-person company."

Each hint is a hypothesis about a conversation your buyer actually has with ChatGPT. Sales calls and support tickets are the best source material - the phrasing prospects use on calls is the phrasing they type into ChatGPT. We go deeper in context hints and targeting.

Measurement for long sales cycles

B2B deals do not close in a session. The measurement stack has two layers; long-cycle advertisers need both (OpenAI docs):

  • The OpenAI pixel (oaiq.min.js) captures a click ID in the __oppref cookie and handles browser-side conversion events.
  • The server-side Conversions API (bzr.openai.com/v1/events) lets your backend or CRM report conversions directly - events deduplicate against pixel events on a shared event_id.

The default conversion window is 30 days. For a sales cycle that runs a quarter, the browser cookie alone will miss late conversions - the practical pattern is to fire lead_created quickly via the pixel, store the click ID against the lead in your CRM, and report downstream events server-side through the Conversions API. Optimization gets a fast feedback signal; reporting captures what the channel is worth per closed deal.

Implementation details - pixel install, event schema, deduplication - are in our conversion tracking setup guide.

The Plus-tier problem for B2B

One structural caveat matters most for B2B: ads appear only to logged-in adults on Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users never see ads (OpenAI).

Think about who in your ICP pays for ChatGPT. Engineering leaders, finance teams, and operators at funded companies skew toward paid tiers - meaning a meaningful share of your best buyers is structurally unreachable by ads on this surface.

They are not unreachable, full stop. Ads never influence ChatGPT's answers (OpenAI, stated repeatedly since February 2026), so the organic recommendation inside the answer renders for every tier - including every Plus and Enterprise seat you cannot buy your way in front of. As our founder put it in The Hindu BusinessLine (August 28, 2026): "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers."

Where Tru Commerce fits

B2B brands on ChatGPT now compete on two layers. The sponsored placement is bought and labeled - it reaches Free and Go users, and everything above tells you how to buy it well. The organic recommendation is earned - and it is the only layer premium users ever see, which for B2B means the only layer much of your pipeline ever sees.

The order of operations follows. Before you commit an $8-18-per-click budget, find out whether ChatGPT already recommends you when buyers ask it to compare vendors. Run the free Citation Rank scan - work email and site URL, results in 24 hours - before you pay to rent conversations you could be earning.
