Criteo Prompt Smart Ads: 2,000 Brands on ChatGPT and a 4x Spend Lift — Tru Commerce guide

OpenAI runs the auction, but an ad-tech layer is forming on top of it - and Criteo got there first. Its Prompt Smart Ads product writes ChatGPT ad creatives and context hints automatically, at catalog scale. Here is what it is, the numbers Criteo has put on the record, and the lesson inside its creative reports that applies whether or not you ever use Criteo.

What Prompt Smart Ads is

Criteo announced on March 2, 2026 that it was the first ad-tech partner integrating with OpenAI's advertising pilot in ChatGPT (Criteo press release, March 2026). Three months later it shipped the creative layer: Prompt Smart Ads, which automatically generates optimized ad creatives and product descriptions tailored to the context of a consumer's query, by combining catalog data, commerce intelligence, and prompt-level insights (Criteo, June 2026).

Three design choices in the beta materials are worth noting:

  1. It generates context hints, not just creative. The system writes ChatGPT-optimized creative variations and the context hints that steer matching - the two levers that decide delivery in a system with no keywords.
  2. It runs alongside product feed ads, not instead of them - positioned as a reach and relevancy layer on top of the catalog feed you already maintain.
  3. Advertisers preview before go-live. Generated creatives get a limited preview before they serve in ChatGPT - automation with a human gate.

The pitch underneath is the correct diagnosis of the channel: shoppers don't hand ChatGPT keywords, they describe scenarios, values, and problems. Ads earn attention by being built for that conversation, not for a query string.

The numbers on the record

  • 2,000+ brands advertising on ChatGPT through Criteo's platform (ppc.land, 2026).
  • ~4x higher spend after activation for campaigns using Prompt Smart Ads (Criteo, June 2026). Read this carefully: it is a delivery result - campaigns complete budgets and scale within ChatGPT more efficiently - not a conversion claim.
  • Market coverage: US at launch, then Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, then the UK, Japan, and South Korea, with European expansion announced August 2026 (Criteo press releases, 2026).

That 4x spend figure is the most interesting one, because underdelivery is the quiet killer in this beta - delivery ramps slowly by design, and OpenAI's own onboarding says so. A creative system that gets campaigns matched into 4x more conversations is solving the channel's actual bottleneck: not clicks, matches.

Keyword vs context hint, in Criteo's words

Criteo's beta materials draw the sharpest version of a distinction we've been making since our first campaign: a keyword is a target word you want to match against a search - it works through keyword matching and ranking, and directly determines when content appears. A context hint is a signal that helps the model understand what topics, products, or audiences are relevant to a chat - it works through OpenAI's relevance and intent matching, and influences when an ad is considered relevant.

Their example pair says it all: the keyword is "running shoe"; the context hints are "marathon training" and "fitness journey." One is a word to intercept. The other is a conversation to belong in - discovery, inspiration, problem-solving, research, planning. Our context hints guide covers how to write these yourself; Prompt Smart Ads is Criteo automating that same judgment at catalog scale.

What the creative report teaches

The beta materials include sample creative reporting - per-creative displays and clicks for an eyewear catalog - and the pattern in it is more useful than any single number. Across eleven creatives (sample data, Criteo Prompt Smart Ads beta materials, 2026):

  • Impressions varied 4x between the top creative and the bottom - roughly 684 displays for "Polarized Sunglasses for Water & Fishing" down to under 170 for generic durability messages.
  • CTR barely moved: every creative landed in a 4-7% band, averaging about 4.7% across ~3,850 displays.

That inversion is the lesson. In search advertising, creative fights for the click and targeting fights for the impression. In a matched-conversation system, creative specificity IS distribution: the scenario-specific creatives - water and fishing, snow and ski, trail running - earned several times the delivery of generic claims, because a specific scenario gives the matching model a conversation to attach to. The click-through, once matched, stays in a narrow band. (Note the level too: these are per-creative product-ad figures from a vendor sample, not the ~0.9% account-level industry CTR eMarketer reports - see our benchmarks page for how the levels differ.)

Write your titles the way those top creatives are written: name the moment, not the material.

Do you need Criteo?

No - and yes, depending on scale. OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager has been open to any US business since May 2026 at a $25 minimum daily budget, and opened in India on September 4 at ₹725/day. A DTC brand with one catalog and a clear buyer can run the whole setup directly.

What Criteo adds is scale mechanics: creative generation across thousands of SKUs, prompt-level insight harvested across 2,000+ advertisers, retail-media integration, and managed delivery. If you are choosing between the two, the honest split is headcount and SKU count - the same split as agency vs self-serve in India.

Either way, the input is the same: your catalog data. Prompt Smart Ads generates from the feed you give it. A thin feed produces thin creative no matter whose model writes it - feed quality is upstream of every layer in this stack.

Where Tru Commerce fits

Prompt Smart Ads optimizes the sponsored box. The answer above the box is a separate system - and brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers (OpenAI, 2026). Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users never see the ad layer at all; for them, the organic recommendation is the only shelf. That layer converts ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025).

So treat Criteo's playbook as confirmation of where the leverage sits: prompt-level insight and catalog quality. Both power the paid layer and the earned one. Before you fund either, run our free Citation Rank scan to see whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity already recommend you organically - results in 24 hours, no login, no credit card. Then use the ChatGPT Ads hub to decide what the paid layer should add on top.
