ChatGPT Ads launched in India on 27 August 2026 for Free and Go users, with 50+ brands in launch week (The Hindu BusinessLine, 27 August 2026). Six weeks on, the spend is a test, the measurement is unsolved, and the answer itself cannot be bought.

1. Will ChatGPT take budget from Google and Meta?
Financial Express printed the maths on 7 September 2026: India's digital ad spend was Rs 94,700 crore in 2025, almost 63% of total ad spend (EY-FICCI, "Stories, Scale and Impact", per Financial Express, 7 September 2026). exchange4media added on 18 September 2026 that closed ecosystems such as Google, Meta and Amazon already capture 70-80% of global ad spend (Redseer, per exchange4media, 18 September 2026).
Our answer there: "They will protect whatever they now do themselves," our co-founder Viren Inaniyan said. "The story is not 'platforms hate competitors'. It is that the assistant, the recommendation, the ad slot and the checkout are collapsing into one stack. Whoever owns that stack does not need to sell the competing tool a banner." Indian spend is "test money, not channel money", and major allocations, he said, wait on "a measurement story finance will accept".
2. Is the $1 billion run rate real, and what is the India price test?
On 1 September 2026 exchange4media reported OpenAI's announcement of a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days as of 31 August 2026. A run rate is a pace, not booked revenue. The India price test starts at Rs 725 a day where Google and Meta set no minimum (Financial Express, 7 September 2026), against OpenAI's recommended starting bids of $3 to $5 a click (per exchange4media, 1 September 2026).
Our two lines: "The yardstick is incremental ROAS, not CPM." And: "ChatGPT ads launched at roughly three times Meta's CPM. That's appetite, not proven ROI."
Behind them sits our ChatGPT Ads benchmarks 2026: chatbot ad CTR of about 0.9% against about 6.4% for Google search (eMarketer, 2026), and about 1.3% in our own US campaigns since July 2026 (our campaign data). TechTimes cited that page the same day, 1 September 2026, "per Tru Commerce CTR benchmark analysis".
3. Which categories are buying?
We told Financial Express that interest is strongest from large retailers and ecommerce, D2C beauty and personal care, SaaS and digital products, and larger enterprises with experimental media budgets. OpenAI told the paper 50 brands had shown interest (per Financial Express, 7 September 2026). The US roster in who is advertising on ChatGPT has the same shape: considered purchases people research in conversation.
4. What should a brand do before spending?
Inc42's AI Shift ran our answer as its Prompt of the Week on 2 September 2026: "You are a brutally honest AI-commerce analyst. I'm the founder of [brand] in [category]. Treat me as an operator, not a beginner." Read how AI describes your brand before paying to sit under its answer.
Ads reach only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans (OpenAI, per The Hindu BusinessLine, 27 August 2026), so premium ChatGPT users never see ads. And the answer is not for sale. As we told The Hindu BusinessLine on launch day: "The entire channel ultimately depends on one promise that brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers." Then: "Brands will compete across two separate layers earning an organic recommendation and winning a clearly labelled sponsored placement." Ad builds, with the context hints that do the targeting, are in ChatGPT ads examples.
The organic layer has its own shortcuts. ETBrandEquity reported on 23 September 2026 that Reddit is the single largest source of LLM citations at 40% (Semrush, per the article). Our line: "It's not possible to automate seeding of content at scale on Reddit. Even if the response is unique for every thread, you still need a genuine human to copy-paste it," Viren said.
5. The measurement problem
In the r/PPC threads compiled in what Reddit advertisers report, self-reported CPCs run $2 to $8 and CTRs 0% to 2.4% by ad group (r/PPC, 2026). The loudest complaint is measurement: one thread reported 120 dashboard clicks against 8 analytics sessions, the rest landing as Direct. That is dark agentic commerce traffic, or DACT, the term Scot Wingo of ReFiBuy uses for AI-referred visits GA4 files as Direct, in paid form; see our DACT guide. The fix advertisers converge on is UTMs on every ad group and the OpenAI pixel before spend (r/PPC, 2026), with the conversion event set in Ads Manager (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). That is the "measurement story finance will accept" from question 1.
6. Is Razorpay selling ChatGPT Ads the real shift?
On 5 October 2026 Razorpay partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT Ads to Indian brands through Razorpay Engage, and exchange4media asked on 9 October 2026 what that changes. Our read: the ad service has "limited demonstrated technical novelty", since catalogue-based campaigns and self-serve access already exist; the shift is operational, with Razorpay "taking on functions typically associated with a marketing agency".
It is the stack from question 1 collapsing from the payments end. As we told Inc42 on 9 September 2026: "Basic building blocks for agent-led commerce are already falling into place. These include AI platforms, commerce protocols, payment networks, gateways, merchant catalogues and checkout systems."

Our Search Console data, 10 October 2026: 2.1 clicks a day at position 29.9 from 7 July to 26 August; 17.2 clicks and 948 impressions a day from 27 August to 7 September; 12.2 clicks a day at position 14.9 from 8 September to 6 October. The peak was 1 September, the exchange4media run-rate day, at 43 clicks. "Is chatgpt ads live in india" ranks at position 7.3, and India delivered 240 clicks to the US's 89.
Where Tru Commerce fits
We run ChatGPT Ads for brands; our own US campaigns since July 2026 average about 1.3% CTR (our campaign data). We have also worked the measurement problem in question 5: for MyMuse, GA4 reported ₹11.5K a month of AI-driven revenue, a 12-month attribution model put it at ₹81.2K a month, 7× the GA4 reading, with ₹29.34 lakh of Year 1 net additional revenue traceable to AI. Budget math is on the ChatGPT Ads India hub; to set up campaign and measurement before the first rupee, book a demo.
