ChatGPT Ads Benchmarks 2026: CTR, CPC, and What Good Looks Like
The first benchmark set for ChatGPT ads: ~0.9% industry CTR (eMarketer), ~1.3% in our own campaigns, $3-5 ecommerce CPCs, and $25-60 CPMs - all early-beta numbers, updated quarterly.

Everyone asking "are ChatGPT ads worth it" hits the same wall: there are almost no published numbers. Here is the benchmark set we use ourselves - industry CTR, our own campaign CTR, CPC and CPM ranges by category, and the conversion context that makes the math work. Every figure is dated and sourced, and we update this page quarterly as the beta matures.
CTR: 0.9% industry, 1.3% in our campaigns
Start with the number that shocks people coming from paid search: chatbot ad CTR benchmarks at roughly 0.9%, against roughly 6.4% for Google search ads (eMarketer, 2026). That is a 7x gap on paper.
It is not an apples-to-apples comparison. A Google search ad sits at the top of a results page the user must click through anyway. A ChatGPT ad is a single labeled sponsored box below a complete answer - one advertiser per matched conversation, no ad stack, no second position. Most users got what they came for before the ad appears. The clicks you do get come from someone who just read a full recommendation and still wanted more.
Our own data runs hotter than the industry line. In Tru Commerce's US campaigns running since July 2026, CTR has averaged ~1.3% (our campaign data). We attribute the gap to tightly written context hints - OpenAI recommends 5-15 discrete buyer-moment descriptions per ad group, and campaigns that describe real purchase moments instead of keyword lists match into warmer conversations. We covered the mechanics in our ChatGPT ads setup guide.
What good looks like in Q3 2026: at or above 1% CTR, you are beating the industry average. Between 0.5% and 0.9%, you are normal for the beta. Below 0.5%, rewrite your context hints before touching bids.
CPC and CPM: what clicks cost by category
Pricing has fallen hard since launch. At the February 2026 US debut, OpenAI charged $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum spend. Both are gone - the self-serve Ads Manager Beta opened in May 2026 with no minimum lifetime spend and a $25 minimum daily budget (OpenAI, May 2026).
The 2026 ranges we see cited and pay ourselves:
- Ecommerce and most consumer categories: $3-5 CPC recommended starting bids (WebFX; OpenAI docs, 2026).
- Software and finance: $8-18 CPC - the same categories that run expensive everywhere (practitioner reports, 2026).
- CPM campaigns: roughly $25-60 for reach objectives (WebFX; OpenAI docs, 2026).
Bidding runs through a relevance-weighted second-price auction with two modes: Maximize results (automatic) or Manual Max CPC. There is also a conversion-optimized CPC option - OpenAI optimizes delivery toward your selected conversion event but still charges per click (OpenAI Help Center, article 20001210). For a full cost walkthrough, see what ChatGPT ads cost for ecommerce.
What good looks like: effective CPCs at or below the recommended range for your category. If your effective CPC drifts above the top of the range, the auction is telling you your relevance score is weak - fix hints and creative before raising bids.
The conversion context: why low CTR can still pay
The number that reframes everything: ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic converts at 15.9%, versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025).
Be precise about what that measures. It is organic referral data - shoppers who clicked out of a ChatGPT recommendation - not ad-click data. The ad units are too young for anyone to publish credible ad-side conversion benchmarks, and agencies openly report measurement gaps and unproven outcomes so far (eMarketer/Digiday, 2026). We will publish ad-side conversion numbers when we have a defensible sample.
But the organic figure sets the ceiling of the channel: visitors arriving from an AI conversation show up pre-sold, because they arrive after a recommendation rather than before a comparison. A 1% CTR feeding traffic that converts at several multiples of search economics can out-earn a 6% CTR feeding cold clicks. That is the honest version of the trade, and we run the full comparison in ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads.
One caveat for your own reporting: much of this traffic lands in GA4 as Direct. Before you judge any benchmark against your analytics, read our guide to dark agentic commerce traffic.
The market is small, growing, and unevenly measured
ChatGPT ads hit $100M in annualized revenue (eMarketer, 2026) - real money roughly six months after US testing began on February 9, 2026, but a rounding error next to search advertising. The footprint is expanding fast: UK on June 6, 2026, plus Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea (OpenAI expansion posts, 2026), and India switched on August 27, 2026 with 50+ brands live in the first week (The Hindu BusinessLine, Aug 28, 2026).
Two structural facts keep the numbers beta-shaped. Ads appear only to logged-in adults on Free and Go tiers - Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users never see them (OpenAI). And delivery ramps slowly during the beta by design (OpenAI onboarding), so early campaigns underspend budgets while the system learns. Expect your first two weeks to look worse than your first two months.
How to benchmark your own campaigns
Judge CTR against 0.9%, not 6.4%. The search benchmark is the wrong yardstick for a one-slot, post-answer ad unit.
Date every number you record. These are early-beta figures. A CPC range set in August 2026 will not survive contact with an open auction at scale.
Instrument before you spend. The OpenAI pixel plus the server-side Conversions API, deduplicated on a shared event_id, is the minimum for trusting any conversion count against a 30-day window.
Watch effective CPC, not bid. A relevance-weighted auction rewards better matching more than bigger bids.
Expect us to update this. We refresh this page quarterly with the industry figures and our own campaign data. Everything else on the channel lives on our ChatGPT Ads hub.
Where Tru Commerce fits
Benchmarks tell you what renting the conversation costs. They say nothing about the layer above the ad: the organic recommendation ChatGPT gives before the sponsored box renders. As our founder put it on the record: "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers" (The Hindu BusinessLine, Aug 28, 2026). Brands now compete on two layers - the earned recommendation and the bought, labeled placement - and premium users only ever see the earned one.
So before you benchmark your paid performance, benchmark your earned position. Our free Citation Rank scan shows where your brand ranks in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and more - results in 24 hours, no login, no credit card. If the organic layer already recommends you, every ad dollar in this post works harder.
