Who Is Advertising on ChatGPT? The Named Brands So Far — Tru Commerce guide

Advertiser lists for new channels are usually guesswork. For ChatGPT ads there's now enough on the record - trade reporting on the US pilot, agency disclosures, and the India launch coverage - to name names. Here's the confirmed roster, who's running the campaigns, and what the pattern says about whether your category belongs here.

The confirmed pilot roster

When OpenAI began testing ads on February 9, 2026, entry ran through agencies at a reported $200,000 minimum - so the first wave was big brands, and trade press documented it. Per Floodlight and Marketing4eCommerce (February 2026):

  • Retail: Target (through its Roundel retail-media arm), Williams-Sonoma, Albertsons
  • Consumer services: The Knot Worldwide (weddings), HelloFresh (meal kits), Audible (audiobooks)
  • Software: Adobe - Acrobat and Firefly campaigns, via WPP
  • Automotive: Ford and Mazda, via WPP
  • Luxury: Audemars Piguet

Other names circulate in secondhand reports, but the list above is what named sources actually confirm. We'll update this post as new disclosures land.

Who runs the campaigns

Three holding companies carried the pilot: Omnicom (reported 30+ clients in the program), WPP Media, and Dentsu. That agency-led shape repeated at each market opening - most recently India, where WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI's first agency partners and 50+ brands went live in the launch week starting August 27, 2026 (The Hindu BusinessLine; Storyboard18).

The important nuance: agency partnership is a launch-wave pattern, not a requirement. The self-serve Ads Manager has been open to any US business since May 2026 with no minimum lifetime spend, and opens to any Indian business on September 4 at ₹725/day. If you're reading agency names and concluding the channel is enterprise-only, that conclusion expired in May.

What the roster tells you

Look at the categories, not the logos. Groceries, cookware, meal kits, weddings, cars, audiobooks, watches - every one is a considered purchase people already research conversationally. A shopper planning meals, comparing sofas, or shortlisting a first car asks exactly the kind of multi-turn questions ChatGPT's matching was built for. That's the fit test for your own brand: if your buyers describe needs and weigh trade-offs before buying, you look like this roster. If you sell on impulse and price alone, you don't - yet.

The second read: retail media discipline arrived on day one. Target entering through Roundel signals that sophisticated retail-media teams treat the conversational slot as shelf space worth defending - the same logic we map across surfaces in our Amazon comparison.

The long tail nobody reports on

Under the headline names sits the self-serve population: D2C electronics and home goods stores, B2B SaaS teams, home-services firms, and agencies testing with their own budgets. They don't get trade coverage - they post their numbers on r/PPC instead, which is why our companion post on what advertisers actually report is the other half of this picture: real CPCs of $2-8 and CTRs from 0% to 2.4%, self-reported.

A tracker category is also forming - third-party tools logging sponsored placements and trigger prompts, since OpenAI publishes no ad library. Useful for competitive spotting; partial and unofficial by nature.

Where Tru Commerce fits

Here's what the roster can't show you: for every brand paying for the slot, some competitor is being recommended for free in the answer above it - and that organic layer is the only one Plus and Pro users ever see. Before you join the named-brands list, run the ten-question test: ask ChatGPT what your buyers ask, and see who it names. A free Citation Rank scan does it systematically in 24 hours. If you're already cited, an ad is a top-up. If you're not, fix that first - it's the shelf the advertisers above are all quietly competing for too.
