Meta Muse explained: what it is, why it's No. 1, how it buys

Meta's Muse agent launched on 8 September 2026 and was the No. 1 free app in the US ten days later; three analytics firms put downloads between 2.3 million and 4.3 million by 24 September. What it is, what it costs, and why the checkout is the part brands should watch.

Meta Muse explained: what it is, why it's No. 1, how it buys - Tru Commerce guide

Muse is the personal AI agent Meta launched on 8 September 2026, and within ten days it was the No. 1 free app in the US. The part that matters for a brand is narrower: Muse can pay at your checkout with a one-time card, and Meta plans to take a fee on the transaction.

Last updated: 26 September 2026.

Meta Muse is Meta's personal AI agent, launched 8 September 2026. It browses, books and buys, runs on the Muse Spark model, is free up to a usage limit, and topped the US App Store from 18 September (TechCrunch, 25 September 2026).

What Meta launched on 8 September

Meta introduced Muse on 8 September 2026 as "a secure, private personal AI agent that proactively helps with people's goals" (Meta Newsroom, 8 September 2026). Launch was US only; Canada followed on 18 September (iPhone in Canada, 18 September 2026) and India has no date (Medianama, 9 September 2026); see what Indian merchants should prepare.

Each Muse runs on "its own dedicated cloud computer" with a full browser, behind a separate agent called Sentinel: "Nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless the Sentinel approves it" (Meta Newsroom, 8 September 2026). Purchases get human-in-the-loop approval with the exact details every time.

Three products share the name. Muse the agent launched on 8 September. Muse Spark is the model underneath, introduced 8 April 2026 as "the first model in our new Muse series" from Meta Superintelligence Labs (Meta Newsroom, 8 April 2026). Muse Image, from 7 July, is a separate image model used in Meta's ad tools (Meta for Business, 7 July 2026).

Free, Power and Max: the token tiers

The Help Center gives the free tier "a usage limit" with no number; Zuckerberg supplied one on launch day, "up to 100M tokens per week" (Mark Zuckerberg on X, 8 September 2026).

Max$100/month"3B Muse tokens per week"Meta Help Center, read 26 September 2026

The business model has no number yet. At Connect, Zuckerberg said: "We believe that Muse will make you money. We're standing behind this by making Muse free for a huge number of tokens with the expectation that over time we will profit by taking a small fee from transactions" (Medianama, 24 September 2026). No rate, date, scope or payer is disclosed.

Downloads and rankings, every estimate named

Rankings are less contested: No. 1 free app on the US App Store from Friday 18 September and on Google Play US from 19 September (Sensor Tower via TechCrunch, 25 September 2026).

House ads for Muse ran across Meta's own apps from 9 September, and by 22 September Sensor Tower placed Muse in the top 10 brands by advertising spend (TechCrunch, 25 September 2026). The first national TV spot aired the weekend of 19 to 20 September and shows the agent buying school supplies (Business Insider via AOL, 20 September 2026). Meta is buying the install base before the transaction fee exists.

What Connect added on 23 September

From Meta's own recap (Meta, 23 September 2026):

  • Retail connectors. "we're adding Walmart, Best Buy, American Eagle Outfitters, DICK'S Sporting Goods, Fanatics, Gap, Michael Kors, Sephora, Ulta, and Wayfair, plus Shop Pay and PayPal for payments. Expedia is coming soon to help you plan travel, and when you're stocking the kitchen, Instacart is there." The ten are announced, not live.
  • Payments. Shop Pay went live "as a wallet in @Muse" on 24 September UTC (Shopify on X, 24 September 2026).
  • Computer use on Mac: "With your permission, Muse can now drive any app on your Mac." Also a Muse email address and Muse Charm, a pocket device.
  • Glasses, "in the coming months", where Meta says Muse will "help buy products you see" (Meta, 23 September 2026).
  • Connector platform. Submissions opened 18 September; Meta counted "more than 1,500 applications in less than week" by Connect (TechCrunch, 23 September 2026). We connected our own MCP server from Muse; steps at connect Tru Commerce from Muse; more in Muse connectors for commerce.

What reviewers found

The hands-on reviews agree on where Muse works and where it stops.

Where it worked. Scot Wingo saw five product cards on launch day and, a week later, had Muse find $20 off and pay through Link (Retailgentic, 8 and 15 September 2026).

Where it broke. CNN's tester watched Target block the autonomous clicks at checkout (CNN, 23 September 2026). Slate's flight booking died at an airline captcha: "So, at least in my experience, Muse is not yet reliable" (Slate, 23 September 2026). And on Sunday night 20 September, Amazon blocked the agent after Meta declined a request to remove it (GeekWire, 21 September 2026); the merchant angle is in Amazon blocks Meta Muse.

The pattern: Muse handles discovery and comparison, and stops at checkout wherever the retailer put a captcha, a login wall or a block.

Why shopping is the part that matters for brands

The agent pays with a card you have never seen. At "more than 1 million businesses that accept Link" Muse checks out with the shopper's saved method; elsewhere Link issues "a single-use virtual card scoped to the approved purchase" (Stripe, 8 September 2026). To your order system that is a guest, card-not-present order. The rails are compared in how Meta Muse pays, with the background in how AI agent payments work.

You stay the merchant of record. "All orders are fulfilled by the merchant that you purchase from" (Meta Help Centre, read 26 September 2026).

The order will not show up where you look. On Shopify, Meta is an AI channel with Catalog access and direct checkout on by default for eligible stores shipping to the US, Canada or Mexico; orders are "attributed to Meta", and "Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Meta's direct checkout" (Shopify Help Center, read 26 September 2026). That is the attribution gap we documented in MyMuse's GA4, and why agent orders sit inside dark agentic commerce traffic. Setup, including Shopify's two off switches, is in Meta Muse for merchants; the surface is covered on Meta AI and Muse for brands.

Add the "small fee from transactions" and the shape is clear: Meta is building a checkout it can meter, and a store that blocks the agent or whose checkout stops it does not get the order. The brands that do have a catalog an agent can parse and a checkout an agent can complete.

Meta calls Muse "the world's first personal AI agent built for everyone" (Meta Newsroom, 8 September 2026); ChatGPT, Gemini, Alexa+ and Copilot are the same category, an agent that holds one person's payment credential and buys. How each one completes a purchase today and the four things a brand must have in place are in AI shopping agents: how they buy, what brands need.

Where Tru Commerce fits

We have run this on Gray Porter and a group of US DTC brands: we made the product pages and checkout readable and finishable by an agent, then placed a real Muse order on the store. To see what an agent sees on your store, book a demo.
