Are ChatGPT Ads Worth It? The Honest Early Read
Chatbot ads average ~0.9% CTR vs Google's 6.4% benchmark, yet ChatGPT traffic converts at 15.9%. We weigh both sides and land on a 10-15% incremental test.

ChatGPT ads click at roughly one-seventh the rate of Google search ads, and agencies openly admit they cannot fully measure the results yet. They are also the only ad format sitting inside the highest-converting referral channel in ecommerce. Both things are true - here is how we would spend against that.
The honest case against
Start with the numbers that should make you cautious, because they are real.
Clicks are scarce. eMarketer benchmarks chatbot ad CTR at roughly 0.9% in 2026, against about 6.4% for Google search ads. People come to ChatGPT for an answer, and the answer usually satisfies them. The sponsored box below it is genuinely secondary.
Measurement is immature. Agencies report measurement gaps and unproven outcomes so far (eMarketer/Digiday, 2026). The OpenAI pixel and Conversions API exist and work, but attribution norms, incrementality studies, and third-party verification are all early. If your CFO asks for a clean ROAS proof from a large ChatGPT spend today, you will struggle to produce one.
Delivery ramps slowly. OpenAI throttles delivery deliberately during the beta (OpenAI onboarding). A new account can take weeks to spend meaningful budget, which frustrates teams used to switching on Google or Meta volume overnight.
Your best customers never see the ads. Ads show only to logged-in adults on Free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users never see them (OpenAI). If your buyer skews professional and premium, paid reach on ChatGPT structurally excludes part of your audience.
Anyone selling you ChatGPT ads without mentioning these four points is not being straight with you.
The honest case for
Now the other side of the ledger - which is why we run campaigns ourselves.
The clicks that do happen convert like nothing else. ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic converts at 15.9%, versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025). A shopper who has already talked through their decision with an assistant arrives pre-qualified. A 0.9% CTR on traffic that converts nine times better is a very different economic proposition than a 0.9% CTR on cold display inventory.
Our own data beats the benchmark. In Tru Commerce's US campaigns running since July 2026, CTR has averaged ~1.3% (our campaign data). We cite that alongside eMarketer's ~0.9%, not instead of it - but it suggests that well-written context hints and tight buyer-moment targeting move the needle. The format rewards relevance work; there is more on how in our setup guide.
One slot, one advertiser. The ad unit is a single labeled sponsored box below the answer, one advertiser per matched conversation (OpenAI). There is no page of ten blue links fighting for attention. When you win the match, you are the only brand in the room.
Competition is thin and the auction is young. ChatGPT ads reached $100M annualized revenue in 2026 (eMarketer) - real money, but small next to search spend. Recommended starting bids sit at $3-5 CPC, $8-18 in software and finance, with CPMs around $25-60 (WebFX; OpenAI docs; practitioner reports, 2026). The relevance-weighted second-price auction is not yet crowded. Early Google Ads rewarded the brands that showed up before their category did; the same window is open here, and it will not stay open.
What it actually costs to find out
The barrier to answering this question for your own brand is low. The $200,000 minimum and $60 CPM from the February 2026 launch are gone. Self-serve opened in May 2026 at ads.openai.com with no minimum lifetime spend, and the minimum daily budget is $25 (OpenAI, 2026). In India - where ads switched on August 27, 2026 and self-serve opens September 4 - the floor is ₹725 per day, and no agency is required (Storyboard18, Aug 2026).
Billing is postpay. Setup needs business details, a tax ID, a billing method, Persona verification, and an account logo. The full cost breakdown, including how the product feed format works, is in our ecommerce cost guide.
A four-week test at the US minimum is roughly $700. Against the option value of learning whether the highest-converting referral channel in ecommerce works for your catalog, that is one of the cheapest experiments in paid media.
Our verdict: a 10-15% incremental test, with two preconditions
We land here: ChatGPT ads are worth testing now, with 10-15% of incremental paid budget - money added to the experiment line, not carved out of campaigns that already convert. How that sits against your existing search spend is the subject of our ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads comparison.
But two preconditions are non-negotiable, and skipping either one turns the test into noise.
Precondition 1: conversion tracking before the first dollar. Install the OpenAI pixel and the server-side Conversions API before launch. The agencies reporting "unproven outcomes" are often describing campaigns that were never instrumented to prove anything. And because much of this traffic hides as Direct in analytics, read our dark agentic commerce traffic guide before you judge results in GA4.
Precondition 2: measure your organic layer first. Brands now compete on two layers in ChatGPT: the organic recommendation, which is earned, and the sponsored placement, which is bought and labeled. As our co-founder put it in The Hindu BusinessLine (Aug 28, 2026): "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers." If ChatGPT already recommends you organically, ads are a top-up. If it never mentions you, ads are a paid patch over an organic hole - and premium users, who see no ads at all, will never encounter you. Know which situation you are in before you spend.
Where Tru Commerce fits
The ad rents the conversation. The organic recommendation earns it - and it is the only layer Plus and Pro users ever see. So the first move is not a media plan; it is a measurement.
Run the free Citation Rank scan - work email and brand URL, results in 24 hours - to see where ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity actually rank you today. That baseline tells you whether ads should top up a working organic presence or whether the organic layer needs fixing first.
