Is ChatGPT Showing Ads in India? Yes — Since August 27 — Tru Commerce guide

Yes - ChatGPT started showing ads in India on August 27, 2026, to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers, with more than 50 brands live in the first week. Paid users never see them. And from September 4, any Indian business can run campaigns directly, starting at ₹725 a day.

The short answer: yes, since August 27

OpenAI switched on ChatGPT ads in India on August 27, 2026. The Hindu BusinessLine reported more than 50 brands live within the first week, with WPP and Omnicom signed on as the first agency partners (Aug 28, 2026).

India is not an experiment on its own - it is the latest stop in a rollout OpenAI began in the US on February 9, 2026, and extended to the UK on June 6, 2026, alongside Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea (OpenAI expansion posts, 2026). We track every market in our rollout tracker, which we update as new countries switch on.

Who sees the ads - and who never does

Free and Go users see ads. Specifically, logged-in adults on those two tiers. That is the entire audience.

Paid users never see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers get an ad-free ChatGPT, permanently, as a feature of the subscription (OpenAI).

Logged-out users are excluded too. Ads serve only to logged-in adult accounts, which is how OpenAI enforces the age gate.

Two guarantees sit underneath this, and OpenAI has repeated them since the February 2026 launch: ads never influence ChatGPT's answers, and conversations are kept private from advertisers. The sponsored box is bolted on below the response - it does not change a word of what the model says.

What the ads actually look like

There are no banners, no interstitials, no video pre-rolls. The unit is deliberately small:

  • One labeled sponsored box below the answer - clearly marked, never blended into the response.
  • Inside the box: advertiser name, logo, a title of up to 50 characters, a description of up to 100 characters, a square image, and a destination link.
  • One advertiser per matched conversation. There is no ad stack and no second slot.

There are also no keywords. Matching is conversational - based on the current conversation topic, past chats, and past ad interactions. Advertisers steer it with context hints: OpenAI recommends 5-15 short buyer-moment descriptions per ad group, which guide matching without acting as exact-match rules (OpenAI Ads Manager docs). If you want the full mechanics - auction, bidding, feeds, and measurement - our ChatGPT Ads hub covers the whole system.

Self-serve opens September 4 at ₹725 a day

The August 27 launch ran through OpenAI's initial brand and agency partners. The bigger date for most Indian businesses is a week later.

From September 4, 2026, ChatGPT Ads Manager is open to any Indian business - self-serve, with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 (Storyboard18, Aug 2026). Agencies are not required. A D2C brand in Jaipur gets the same console WPP gets.

What to expect inside the account:

  • Bid models: CPM for awareness, CPC for traffic, and conversion-optimized CPC - OpenAI optimizes delivery toward your selected conversion event but still charges per click (OpenAI Help Center, article 20001210).
  • Campaign objectives: Clicks or Reach, with Maximize results (auto) or Manual Max CPC bidding on a relevance-weighted second-price auction.
  • Setup requirements: business details, tax ID, billing method, Persona verification, and an account logo before serving. Billing is postpay.
  • Slow ramp is normal. Delivery ramps slowly during beta by design (OpenAI onboarding) - do not judge a campaign on day two.

If you plan to launch on day one, our step-by-step setup guide walks through the whole flow, and our ecommerce cost breakdown covers what campaigns actually cost in practice.

Keep expectations honest

Two numbers frame what you are buying. ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic converts at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025) - the surface is worth being on. But chatbot ad click-through rates run around 0.9%, versus a ~6.4% Google search benchmark (eMarketer, 2026). In our own US campaigns running since July 2026, CTR has averaged ~1.3% (our campaign data) - better than the industry figure, still nowhere near search.

Agencies also report measurement gaps and unproven outcomes so far (eMarketer/Digiday, 2026). India is a brand-new auction on top of a young ad product. Budget like it is a test, because it is.

Where Tru Commerce fits

Here is the framing we gave The Hindu BusinessLine when the India launch was announced: "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers."

Every brand in India now competes on two layers. The sponsored placement is bought and labeled - it rents space below the answer, for Free and Go users only, for as long as you pay ₹725 a day or more. The organic recommendation is earned - it is the answer itself, and it is the only layer Plus and Pro users ever see.

That second layer is where we work. Before you spend a rupee on September 4, find out whether ChatGPT already recommends you when Indian shoppers ask what to buy. Run the free Citation Rank scan - work email and brand URL, results in 24 hours, with three prescriptive recommendations. If the earned layer is weak, ads are patching a hole; if it is strong, ads compound it.
