AI shopping assistant
Also known as: AI shopping agent · conversational shopping assistant
A conversational agent that helps a shopper discover, compare, and buy products - either a third-party surface like ChatGPT or a brand's own on-site assistant.
An AI shopping assistant is a conversational agent that does a shopper's product research and, increasingly, the purchase itself. The shopper describes what they want in natural language; the assistant handles discovery, comparison, and recommendation, and can complete checkout in the conversation.
There are two kinds. Third-party assistants - ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Rufus, Copilot - sit between the shopper and every brand, and a brand competes to be the one they name. A brand's own on-site assistant is an AI shopping assistant the brand controls directly, so it keeps the customer relationship and the data instead of renting them from a third party.
The commercial case is conversion. Sessions that begin with an AI shopping assistant convert at materially higher rates than traditional site browsing, because the assistant narrows to a decision rather than returning a page of links. The strategic risk is that on third-party surfaces the assistant, not the brand, chooses what to recommend.
