Agent surface
Also known as: AI surface
The screen or channel where an AI agent interacts with a shopper. The six major agent surfaces are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Rufus, Copilot, and Claude.
An agent surface is any place a shopper can interact with an AI agent — chat interface, voice assistant, in-app assistant, browser-integrated agent. The six agent surfaces that matter for commerce as of 2026: OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini (including Buy for Me in Search), Perplexity, Amazon's Rufus, Microsoft's Copilot, and Anthropic's Claude. Emerging surfaces include Meta.ai, xAI's Grok, and voice-first Alexa+.
Every agent surface has its own ranking model, shopper demographic, protocol integration, and monetization dynamic. Treating all six as one channel is the most common mistake we see in agentic commerce strategy.
The term "agent surface" is our preferred label because it's neutral to whether the surface is a screen, an app, or a voice endpoint — a critical distinction as voice-first agent surfaces (Alexa+) start to matter.
A brand's own site is also an agent surface once it hosts a conversational shopping agent — the AI Shopping Assistant is Tru Commerce's on-site version, so the brand owns the surface directly instead of depending entirely on third-party ones.
