BigCommerce and Agentic Commerce: What Merchants Get
BigCommerce is the most credible non-Shopify option for agentic commerce. Here is what it actually ships, and where merchants still carry the work.

The most substantive non-Shopify platform position in this space, and a genuinely different trade-off.
TL;DR
- BigCommerce has published more on agentic commerce than any platform except Shopify — agentic checkout, the protocol layer, and store preparation.
- Its API-first architecture suits agent integration: less to fight when exposing catalog and cart.
- The trade-off against Shopify is control versus managed distribution.
- It solves connectability. It does not solve whether an agent picks you.
Why BigCommerce shows up in AI answers
When engines answer agentic commerce questions, BigCommerce appears more than any platform other than Shopify — across 23 different questions in our September 2026 analysis, on four of the five engines we track.
That is not an accident of authority. It is the result of publishing genuinely detailed material on the subject while most platforms were still quiet. The engines cite what is written clearly and available, and BigCommerce wrote it.
There is a lesson in that for merchants which has nothing to do with platform choice: the category is young enough that whoever documents it well gets cited.
The architectural fit
Agent integration asks a platform for things conventional storefronts never needed: programmatic access to catalog, real-time availability, cart construction from outside the storefront, and checkout an external actor can complete.
An API-first platform has less to retrofit here. Where a template-driven storefront has to expose what was designed to be rendered, BigCommerce's surface was already built to be called. That is a real advantage and it is worth more as agent flows get more demanding.
The trade-off against Shopify
Shopify's agentic storefronts hand merchants managed connections to major AI channels from the admin. That is the least work a merchant can do.
BigCommerce gives you building blocks rather than channel connections. With engineering capacity, that is preferable — you shape the integration, you are not waiting on a roadmap, and you are not restricted to the surfaces someone else chose to support.
Without engineering capacity it is worse, because building blocks stay blocks.
Be honest about which of those describes your team. Most agentic commerce disappointment traces back to a platform choice made on capability and staffed on hope.
What merchants still have to do
Identical on every platform, and it is where the outcome is actually decided:
Product data an agent can act on. Variant titles that distinguish, sizing and compatibility as text, accurate availability. Ambiguity gets resolved in favour of a competitor the agent can describe more confidently.
Pricing the agent can trust. If the price the agent quotes and the price at checkout diverge, you lose the sale and possibly the channel.
Corroboration. Reviews and independent sources carry weight your own description cannot.
Measurement. Nothing in your admin tells you whether an assistant is recommending you. That requires asking the assistants directly, on a schedule.
Where to start
Before any integration work, find out whether assistants name you at all for the questions your buyers ask. If they do not, the connection has nothing to carry.

Q: Do I need BigCommerce Enterprise? A: Capabilities largely follow the API surface rather than plan tier, but check against your account and the current release rather than any blog post.
FAQ
Yes. BigCommerce has published detailed material on agentic checkout and protocol support, and its API-first architecture makes exposing catalog and cart to an agent relatively straightforward. It is the most substantive non-Shopify platform position in this space.
Shopify leads on managed distribution - connections to major AI channels handled from the admin. BigCommerce leads on openness and control. If you have engineering capacity and want to shape the integration, BigCommerce suits you; if you want the channel connections handled, Shopify does less work for you.
Checkout that an AI agent can complete on the shopper's behalf rather than handing them to a form. BigCommerce covers the mechanics in its own documentation; the merchant-side requirements are accurate pricing, availability and product data the agent can act on without guessing.
The agentic capabilities largely follow the API surface rather than the plan tier, but exactly what is available depends on your contract and the current release. Check against your account rather than against a blog post, including this one.
