How to Sign Up for ChatGPT Ads: Account Setup Walkthrough — Tru Commerce guide

Signing up for ChatGPT ads takes one session at ads.openai.com, but two specific tasks - billing and a logo - silently block serving even after your account is approved. Here is the exact sequence: business information, Persona identity verification, advertiser profile, postpay billing, and team invites, in the order the Ads Manager asks for them.

What you need before you start

Gather five things before opening the signup flow. Having them ready turns a multi-day back-and-forth into a single sitting.

  • An OpenAI account with a work email. The Ads Manager is a separate product at ads.openai.com, but it authenticates through your OpenAI login.
  • Legal business details - registered name, address, and website. These need to match your registration documents, because they feed verification.
  • Your tax ID. OpenAI requires it as part of account setup before ads can serve.
  • A payment method for the billing profile. Billing is postpay, so nothing is charged at signup - but the method must be on file before serving starts.
  • A square logo file. It renders at 32×32 pixels on the ad unit, so a wordmark with fine detail will turn to mush. Use the same mark you use as a site favicon.

There is no minimum lifetime spend and no spend commitment at signup - both the $200,000 minimum and the $60 CPM from the February 2026 launch are gone (WebFX; OpenAI docs, 2026). The only floor you will meet later is the $25 minimum daily campaign budget.

The signup sequence, step by step

Step 1: create the account at ads.openai.com. Sign in with your OpenAI credentials and start a new advertiser account. One person opens the account; everyone else joins later through team invites, so pick the owner deliberately - ideally someone with authority over billing.

Step 2: enter business information. Legal entity name, address, website, and tax ID. Enter these exactly as they appear on your registration documents. Mismatches between what you type here and what verification finds are the most common source of delay in any ads platform onboarding, and this one is no different.

Step 3: complete Persona identity verification. OpenAI uses Persona, a third-party identity verification service, to confirm the person behind the account. This is a beta-platform tell: OpenAI is keeping the advertiser pool clean while the product is young, which is good news for advertisers who get through - fewer scam ads in the auction means the format keeps its credibility.

Step 4: build the advertiser profile and upload your logo. Your advertiser name and logo appear on every ad you ever run - the ad unit is a single labeled sponsored box showing advertiser name, logo, a title of up to 50 characters, a description of up to 100, an image, and a destination link (OpenAI Ads Manager docs). The logo renders as a 32×32 favicon. Check it at actual size before uploading; if you cannot read it at 32 pixels, neither can a shopper.

Step 5: set up the billing profile. Add a payment method and complete the billing details. ChatGPT ads bill postpay: spend accrues as campaigns run and is charged afterward. That removes the prepay friction other platforms have, but it also means an incomplete billing profile fails silently - the account looks ready, and nothing serves.

Step 6: invite your team. Add teammates from account settings so campaign management, creative, and billing do not all route through one login. Do this before launch, not after - the person who opened the account should not be the single point of failure on day one.

For what happens after signup - campaign objectives, bidding, context hints - pick up with our full setup guide and the Ads Manager walkthrough.

The two tasks that block serving

OpenAI is explicit about this: even with an approved account and a live campaign, ads will not serve until two tasks are complete - the billing profile and the account logo.

  • Billing profile. A payment method on file, business details, and tax ID. Postpay does not mean optional; it means charged later.
  • Account logo. No logo, no serving. The ad unit is built around advertiser identity, and OpenAI will not run an anonymous box.

Check both before you diagnose anything else. In our experience, "my ChatGPT campaign isn't spending" is usually one of three things: a missing logo, an incomplete billing profile, or normal beta behavior - delivery ramps slowly during beta by design (OpenAI onboarding). Give a correctly configured campaign several days before touching bids, and see conversion tracking setup so measurement is live before spend is.

Signing up from India: open from September 4

Ads switched on for Indian Free and Go users on August 27, 2026, with 50+ brands live in the first week and WPP and Omnicom as the first agency partners (The Hindu BusinessLine, Aug 28, 2026; Storyboard18, Aug 2026).

The self-serve door opens a week later: from September 4, 2026, ChatGPT Ads Manager is available to any Indian business, with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 (Storyboard18, Aug 2026). Agencies are not required - the signup sequence above applies as-is. If you are weighing the two routes, we compare them in agency or self-serve for India, and we track every market's status on the rollout tracker.

Where Tru Commerce fits

The account you just created buys one of the two layers a brand can occupy in ChatGPT. As we put it on the record: "Brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT's answers" (The Hindu BusinessLine, Aug 28, 2026). The sponsored box is bought and labeled; the organic recommendation inside the answer is earned - and it is the only layer Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users ever see, because ads appear only to logged-in adults on Free and Go tiers (OpenAI).

The economics favor the earned layer too. ChatGPT-referred ecommerce traffic converts at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic (Adobe, 2025), while chatbot ad CTR runs around 0.9% industry-wide (eMarketer, 2026) - our own US campaigns have averaged ~1.3% since July 2026 (our campaign data). Ads rent the conversation; recommendations compound.

So before you fund the account, find out where you stand organically. Run the free Citation Rank scan - see how often ChatGPT already recommends your brand, and get your rank in 24 hours. Then use paid to fill the gaps, not to substitute for visibility you could own. Our ChatGPT Ads hub covers both layers, and how the ads work and what they cost goes deeper on the auction you are about to enter.
